Colt Campbell


Mr. Colt Campbell is currently in his 8th year of teaching, his 2nd at James Island Charter High School. During his first year at JICHS, the Concert Band received a "Superior with Distinction" rating, the first since 2001, at the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment.  Also during this year, the Marching Band swept their class at 2 local contests, an after-school Jazz Band was created, and Region Band participation grew.  Heading into the 2018-2019 school year, the band program boasts a 47% increase in enrollment. Jazz Band, AP Music Theory, and regular visits by professional musicians have also been added to the curriculum. Mr. Campbell previously served as the Director of Bands at West-Oak High School, where he was selected as the 2014 'Teacher of the Year'!  

‚ÄčThe band program at WOHS experienced tremendous growth under Mr. Campbell's baton, tripling to over 130 members. The program earned the Outstanding Performance Award in 2016 and 2017, the highest award given by the South Carolina Band Director’s Association. The Marching Warriors made appearances in State Finals each of his last 3 years, placing 5th in AAA Finals in 2016. Prior to his appointment at West-Oak, Mr. Campbell held the position of Assistant Band Director at Dutch Fork Middle and High Schools in Irmo, SC. Originally from Roanoke, VA, Mr. Campbell holds a Master’s of Music Education Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with an emphasis in Music Education, and a Performance Certificate in trombone from the University of South Carolina. 

Mr. Campbell has performed regularly throughout the state of South Carolina. He most recently served as the bass trombonist of the GAMAC Chamber Orchestra in Anderson, SC and has performed with the South Carolina Philharmonic, The Charleston Wind Symphony, Carolina Wind Symphony, the Electric City Jazz Band and many other ensembles throughout South Carolina. In 2010, Mr. Campbell was selected as one of 3 finalists in the Eastern Trombone Workshop National Solo Competition hosted by the U.S. Army Band, where he performed live in Washington D.C.  

Mr. Campbell's professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, the South Carolina Band Director Association, and the International Trombone Association.

Mr. Campbell resides in Charleston with his wife, Katie and his two little boys, Conner and Cooper. His hobbies include spending time with family, music-making, home improvement, running, and personal fitness.
