We Are JICHS!

Welcome to the beautiful James Island Charter High School. We are the zoned high school for James Island and Folly Beach residents. However, our charter allows us to open our doors to students across Charleston County. The focus of our charter is the prestigious and challenging international baccalaureate program. We are the only high school in the district that offers the full IB diploma program and we are one of the top rated comprehensive high schools in the state of South Carolina. Besides our IB courses, we offer a variety of dual enrollment and advanced placement courses.

IB 2024
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

For more than 20 years, we have been proud to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum in pursuit of this commitment to our students, families and community. 

The IB Diploma is a rigorous 2 year curriculum that aims to cultivate open-minded, balanced and reflective learners who seek to make positive changes in the world. This approach is unique in its focus on the holistic development of the student through its emphasis on global perspectives and inquiry based learning. Moreover, IB learners develop a greater understanding of global citizenship through engaging in content while considering diverse worldviews on a local and global level.

AVID 2024
AVID PROGRAM

At JICHS, we believe students rise when they are challenged, supported, and known. AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—fits squarely within the JICHS culture of high expectations, strong relationships, and learning that matters beyond the classroom.

AVID at JICHS helps students develop the habits of mind that define successful Trojans: curiosity, perseverance, and ownership of learning. Through proven strategies, students learn how to think critically, manage their time, advocate for themselves, and engage deeply with rigorous coursework. These skills show up everywhere at JICHS: in honors and AP classes, in project-based learning, in discussions, and in real-world problem-solving. 

Our AVID students are not looking for an easier path—they are choosing a stronger one. AVID supports motivated students who are ready to push themselves academically while benefiting from structured support, intentional mentoring, and a community that expects growth and develops ownership over their learning. Students are encouraged to enroll in challenging courses, reflect on their learning, and build the confidence to navigate college and career opportunities with purpose.

Big Beyond 2024
Big Beyond Scholar Program

Partnering with James Island Charter High School's (JICHS) Equity & Access Team, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry (BBBSL)  launched the BIG Beyond, a three-year curriculum-guided program designed to help prepare high potential African-American scholars for life BEYOND graduation. 

In the spring of each year, JICHS recommends to BBBSL a cohort of 25-30 rising sophomores for participation in the program.

CTE 2024
We are preparing college/career ready students!

Students may also choose from 41 different career technical education courses and 17 different completer programs such as Health Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Building and Construction Management, and Culinary Arts.

Visual Arts
Visual Arts Department

Within our visual arts department, we offer a foundation course of Art 1 followed by a variety of classes exploring two and three dimensional media like IB and AP Art, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Photography. Our students' work is frequently recognized by numerous local, state and national art competitions.

Performing Arts
Performing Arts

We have a well rounded performing arts program that features instruction in band, chorus, string orchestra, theater, jazz and percussion ensembles and many more. These programs consistently receive superior ratings in state competitions.

Our Piano program currently has the most students enrolled in any of our performing arts classes with 175 students this year---that's more than double of anything else we offer here at JI. It is the largest piano program in the greater Charleston area and in the southeastern US. It is one of the programs that really make JI stand out from other schools.

JICHS Athletics

JICHS has 22 Varsity sports teams which includes all sports offered by the South Carolina High School League. Our sports teams frequently compete in regional and state competitions. If interested in playing sports at JICHS, visit our Athletics Website at jichsathletics.com

CCSD's School Choice application process for the 2026-2027 school year is NOW OPEN! This year, the application window will close on February 12, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
