Hello My Name Is...
Andrea R. Kemper is the Director of the Chorus, Orchestra, and Piano Programs at James Island Charter High School. A native of Miami, Florida, she is a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina where she earned her Masters Degree in Music Education. Kemper was the Graduate Assistant for the USC String Project. And studied cello privately with Dr. Robert Jesselson. She was very active in college divisions of ASTA, MENC and was selected to be a member of Lambda Kappa Psi Music Honors Society. Kemper also taught Fifth Grade Strings and General Music while completing her degree.
Prior to moving to Columbia, Kemper taught Chorus, Orchestra and Guitar in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools at Palmetto Middle School. She was Secretary of the Florida Orchestra Association. Her private cello students consistently received top honors at state, region and county events. Kemper earned her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with a double-principal in piano and cello from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Kemper studied piano with Teresa Escandon, cello with Ross Harbaugh. Kemper is a graduate of Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC.
The music program has nearly tripled since Kemper’s arrival at the high school with the support of the JICHS Administration and Charter Board. 2008-2014 accolades include the String Orchestra and Concert Choir earning overall Superior ratings, Orchestra students earning Superior and Excellent ratings at Solo & Ensemble and recent participation in Region Orchestra. The Concert Choir earned an Excellent rating at Concert Festival and participated in the 2009 Young Americans Workshop. All music students have had the opportunity to participate in the Charleston Concert Association and have been able to see artists such as Joshua Bell, Vienna Boys Choir, and the Martha Graham Dance Company.
Kemper recently had the honor of being selected to perform as a soloist on piano with the 2009 Region Orchestra, and solo cello with the 2009 All-County Choir. She was a clinician for the 2009, 2011, and 2013 Cello Choir events where she worked with the Large Choir made up cello students of all levels. Kemper was the Guest Conductor for the 2009 Beaufort All County Middle School Orchestra. She was a finalist for the 2009 Teacher of the Year at JICHS. She is advisor for the In The Key of Awesome Glee Club and Sounds of Troy Chamber Orchestra.
Kemper has performed in such ensembles as the USC Symphony Orchestra, USC Concert Choir, Alhambra Orchestra, University of Miami Symphony Orchestra, Il Giovanni Orchestra, Tetrachord String Quartet and numerous other performing ensembles on both piano and cello. She maintains professional memberships with the Charleston County Orchestra and Chorus Associations as well as MENC, ASTA and is a member and frequent soloist at James Island Presbyterian Church. Students of her Private Cello & Bass Studio have performed as soloists and been participants of SC Region and All State Orchestras.
